Kurort Rathen, the smallest village in Saxony, is divided into two distinct parts by the River Elbe. The only connection between the two is the ferry “Bergland”, a technical monument propelled solely by the current of the river. Rathen is furthermore recognised as a climatic health resort thanks to the good quality of its air, and is an excellent starting point for walks in the Saxon Switzerland.

Bastei Viewpoint
The Bastei is probably the most famous rock formation in the Saxon Switzerland, standing high above the right bank of the Elbe between Rathen and Wehlen. It is the most visited tourist attraction in the region and can be accessed via a stone bridge built across the gaps between the rock pinnacles. Both the bridge and the terrace of the Bastei Restaurant offer unhindered views over the Elbe valley and the surrounding countryside.

Königstein Fortress

Built atop the table mountain of the same name, at the heart of the Saxon Switzerland, Königstein Fortress is the largest mountain fortress in Europe. The fortress plateau lies 240 metres above the Elbe and has an area of approx. 9.5 hectares. The first castle buildings were erected for military purposes at the end of the 11th century, and the complex has been expanded on numerous occasions over the centuries. A 152.5-metre-deep well is the second deepest castle well in Europe. Work to establish a Saxon state fortress began in 1589. The fortress has since been used in many ways and can boast that it was never successfully besieged and conquered at any time in its history.
