The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs for short) of the United Nations are considered key global goals in sustainability. In September 2015, the 17 sustainability goals were published as part of the UN 2030 Agenda. They formulate the central challenges and intentions of global sustainability policy and thus form the guiding model for sustainable development in society, culture, and economy. As part of global value chains, the Koenig & Bauer Group influences economic, ecological, and social developments – partly directly and significantly, partly only indirectly and slightly. Koenig & Bauer has been a participant in the UN Global Compact since 2021.

We commit to the sustainability goals and actively promote compliance with these standards across all our business processes, demanding this from our suppliers as well. Koenig & Bauer has identified seven of these SDGs as priorities and backed them with strategic sustainability initiatives:

In these goals, we see the greatest leverage for our sphere of influence and impact.

In July 2021, Koenig & Bauer became the first printing press manufacturer to join the Healthy Printing Initiative. The basic concept of the initiative is to advance the implementation of the Cradle-to-Cradle Design Concept (C2C) in the printing industry. Here, printing substrates, inks, varnishes, and auxiliary materials used in printing paper, corrugated board, cartonboard products, plastics, and other substrates are in focus.

The 4evergreen Alliance promotes the contribution of fiber-based packaging to the circular economy through collaboration across the entire value chain. The alliance aims to communicate the advantages of fiber-based packaging materials as alternative solutions more strongly and advocate for EU-wide harmonized guidelines for product design that facilitate recyclability, as well as support the optimization of collection systems and suitable recycling infrastructures and technologies. To this end, 4evergreen connects paper and board manufacturers, folding carton manufacturers, brand owners and retailers, technology and material suppliers, as well as the collection, sorting, and recycling industry.

The Banknote Ethics Initiative (BnEI) has established a strict code for preventing and combating corruption and antitrust violations in banknote printing and trade since its founding in 2013. The developed principles are not only recognized among BnEI members, but are also shared by a significant portion of central banks and banknote printing facilities worldwide. As a founding member of the BnEI, Koenig & Bauer Banknote Solutions has subjected itself to strict rules of conduct and transparency, compliance with which is verified as part of the accreditation renewed every three years based on an audit program developed by the BnEI.
