Industrial Environmental Protection

Of course, we do not only ensure that all Koenig & Bauer products meet our standards regarding energy and resource consumption. We also rely on exemplary, future-oriented, and responsible behavior in our own plants. The production plants in Radebeul, Würzburg, and Dobruška hold environmental certification according to DIN EN ISO 14001:2015. The production company Industrial at the Würzburg and Radebeul sites, as well as the foundry operation in Würzburg, also operate an energy management system according to DIN EN ISO 50001:2018. Koenig & Bauer Sheetfed in Radebeul has received EMAS certification.

Responsible use of energy and resources is a central concern for Koenig & Bauer. An important building block in this regard is the procurement and self-generation of electricity from renewable energy sources. At the locations in Würzburg, Radebeul, Löhne, and Veitshöchheim, 100% of electricity is sourced from Scandinavian hydropower. On-site power generation with photovoltaic systems takes place at the plants in Würzburg, Mödling, and Radebeul, as well as at the sales and service subsidiary in Italy. In addition, solar thermal systems are used for water heating at the Würzburg site. At the Mödling plant, heat supply is provided via district heating from biomass power plants.

Alongside the use and self-generation of renewable energies, targeted energy saving is another key pillar of our energy management. To this end, we rely on concrete modernizations such as the recently completed renovation and insulation of heating pipelines at the Radebeul plant, as well as the systematic inspection of our compressed air systems. Another building block for saving electricity while simultaneously improving working conditions is the conversion of lighting to LED technology across sites.

A future-oriented approach to resources also includes comprehensive waste management. We avoid waste as far as possible, while non-avoidable waste is properly disposed of in accordance with legal requirements. Our waste balance sheet provides detailed information on the type and amount of waste generated. Responsible waste management ensures proper disposal according to legal regulations. Disposal differentiates between hazardous and non-hazardous waste, as well as between recovery and disposal. Re-meltable metal waste generated in machining manufacturing in Würzburg is an important raw material for foundry operations. In Radebeul, re-meltable metal waste is sent for reuse via the waste disposal company.

We are conscious of a responsible approach to business travel and have adjusted our travel policy accordingly. Beside targeted travel planning with appropriate choice of transport, limiting business trips in terms of participant numbers and relevance is the greatest leverage.

Conscious nutrition connects operational environmental protection with responsibility for our employees. More and more employees pay attention to a balanced diet. In our company canteens in Würzburg and Radebeul, we offer a varied menu with vegetarian and partially vegan options.

Our plant vocational school at Koenig & Bauer in Würzburg received the Bronze certification level. Crucial to this was saving as much CO2 as possible in a total of eight action fields (waste, purchasing, nutrition, communication & networking, compensation & C-binding, mobility, electricity, heating). After determining the CO2 footprint of the school, teachers and students of the Koenig & Bauer plant vocational school defined projects and measures for CO2 reduction with the help of a climate protection plan.
